  • Church of the Death and Cemetery of Mummies, Urbania

Posted 17 giugno 2014 By in prima pagina With | No Comments
A trip to the Marche can not rule out a visit to Urbania, the city with the most macabre italian museum: the museum of the “mummies” or better, the cemetery of mummies, enclosed within the Church of the Dead. In the crypt behind the high altar, are exposed 18 naturally mummified bodies.

The story begins in 1567 when it was founded in Urbania the Brotherhood of the “Good Death.” The statutes of the Brotherhood was composed of as 31 chapters, but the precise purpose of the association was free transportation of corpses, assistance to the dying, the registration of the appropriate books of the dead and the distribution of alms to the relatives of deceased. The burial of the bodies took place in the back of the small church, in a land used as a cemetery.

In the early 1800s, Napoleon Bonaparte issued an edict which established extraurban cemeteries for health reasons, even in the little cemetery of Urbania work began on the exhumation of the bodies that, incredibly, surfaced intact! In 1833, the 18 mummified bodies found were displayed behind the altar, in the crypt of the chapel, that taken the name of the Church of the Dead.  In the 60s and 70s, some anthropologists and biologists gave a scientific explanation of the phenomenon: it seems that a particular mold in the soil, caused its drying.

In practice, the bodies, in addition to the skeletal structure, they have the skin, organs, and in some cases the hair, genitals … which are still visible behind the glass wall. The climatic condition of Urbania and the presence of these strange mold, in fact, have meant that the bodies become mummies maintaining internal organs, part of clothes and even hair.

These mummies belong to humble people and often sick, marginalized by society and which were often violent deaths as you can clearly tell from the marks left on the mummified bodies. Each of the 18 characters hide his dramatic story of death that has been handed down to us and you can imagine the structure and features of the body: the center of the group, the Prior of the Brotherhood of the Good Death, who took care of the accommodation of the dead, Vincenzo Piccini, his wife and son; the mummy of the baker said “Lunano” and the woman who died in childbirth (with the ventral torn in the shape of a cross, clearly visible). Below you will find a young man stabbed in a vigil dancing with the hole of the blade; then the hanged and the buried alive.

Also National Geographic Channel has made an interesting documentary about these mummies.

For to stay near Urbania we suggest:

  • Il frutto dell’estate : la pesca

Posted 8 maggio 2014 By in prima pagina With | No Comments

Posted 23 aprile 2014 By in prima pagina With | No Comments
